Mark Tan contributes to Seputeh Community Blog

Folks!
These are two pictures which Mark Tan sent in an email where he raised the issue of security at the walkway near TS1:

Hi Attached are pix of the junction at Jalan 1. As I frequently walk to midvaley Im wondering what has happened to the upkeep of the walk way. I do believe that the fence was put up to fend of snatch theives. I do not understand what the purpose of all the plants are. They are now overgrown and provide ample hiding places for would be muggers. The situation is more unsafe at night. I was informed that the idea has its pros and cons but Im yet to see any of the proa as I belive there was a snatch theft incident recently. I hope something can be done about the situation here before anything worse happens.

We welcome feedback or comments.

David can now post

Dear David,

As you have been prolific and have been making good sense, welcome to this blog as an author.

Please help Orang Seputeh make our Seputeh a better place to live in. And, we encourage you to join the SRA, even if you are a condo occupant. You are still a resident, aren't you? And SRA should be for ALL residents.

Best regards,

David wants to post

Hi David
With reference to your comment that this blog centred on security, you are right. We have this blog to address security issues for Seputeh.
For other issues, there is a Yahoo newsgroup managed by the Seputeh Residents' Association (SRA) plus a website as well. The SSTF encourages you to join SRA, even if you are a resident within a condo.
As for your request to be allowed to post, please email me your particulars and we will consider it.

Best regards,

Vote & Have Your Voice Heard

Folks! It's time for you to have your voice heard. Vote for how much you want to pay for better security. The previous poll was too general but the overall result was that more were willing to pay RM3 per day.
To be fair, affordability differs from one household to another. So, there is now a detailed poll for you by category and you have about a month to do so. Please choose your category and vote accordingly at the poll on the left column here.
Please feel free to comment as well and you may do so by clicking comment at the end of this post. As long as the comments are apparently genuine, they will be published. Perspectives differ as one may say it costs only a glass of teh tarik or two a day.

Hope Henry Long's alert helps

Folks!
Please read what Henry Long has to share in his comment on my posting about the mobile police van.
Hope his alert helps.

Perhaps Henry might want to share more details or what happened since his police report.

Balai Bergerak in Seputeh, thanks to SSTF

What a pretty sight -- a mobile police station in Seputeh. Please click on the pictures to view in full.
SSTF chairman Robert Quah happily reported that following the SSTF's contacts with Brickfields' police, the Officer-in-Charge decided to send the mobile station every day. This has been going on for the past 3 days.

This is what we call deterrence. At least, an obvious police presence if not a show of force.

Orang Seputeh congratulates SSTF for having something tangible to show at last!

Best regards,

theft at police store

Another example of why we cannot take things for granted. This news item from yesterday's NST was just below the article about being robbed at Jalan Travers.

Here the police themselves found they were victims. To add to this, there is another news item about ACA office losing a pistol among other things in a burglary -- and the investigators are pointing the finger at someone hired to guard the office.

Once the irony of it all sinks in, we in Seputeh must be mindful of this when we consider engaging security services. In the final analysis, any service provider is only as good as those who hire and supervise them. Yet, this should not hinder us from helping ourselves.

Please sign up for the security scheme and tell your neighbours to do so.

Best regards,

Robbed near Travers police station (click on image to read clipping)

A sad tale in yesterday’s NST where people got robbed at a petrol station at Jalan Travers. I know of only one petrol station along that road and it’s only a stone’s throw away from the Travers police station. This is a reminder that we cannot take anything for granted. And the scene of this crime is not too far away from Seputeh. I wonder if the petrol station workers called the police while this was going on. Maybe they were too petrified to act or they froze in terror as well.

Let’s think about this. If this was in a neighbourhood with mobile security patrols, at least the guards are DUTY-BOUND to immediately call the cops.

Who's Who at SSTF

As more Seputeh residents come to know -- and support -- the community self-help security initiative, Orang Seputeh thought it would be good to post the names and email contacts of the people who form the core group.

So here goes:
Chairman: Mr Robert Quah quahrobert@yahoo.com, robertquah@myjaring.net
Deputy Chairman: Mr K.K. Hum humkk@hotmail.com
Secretariat Head: Ms Cynthia Hor cynhor@yahoo.com
Honorary Treasurer: Mr Wilson Szeto wszeto70@hotmail.com
Publicity Head: Mr Deepak Gharpuray deg@apl.no

... and backed by a team of almost 20 volunteers drawn from all corners of Seputeh.

In keeping with the highest standards of transparency, all Seputeh residents are encouraged to email any of them if they need to check any fact or anything they have overheard from anyone.

Come straight to the SSTF core group and get your doubts cleared.

SSTF is still out to recruit more volunteers, especially in streets which are not covered. Remember, more volunteers means each volunteer will have to cover fewer areas. If you wish to serve, please email anyone of the above.

Welcome, TS1 volunteer Nadia Hazeman Aziz!

Orang Seputeh welcomes Ms Nadia Hazeman Aziz to the Seputeh Security Task Force (SSTF) as a volunteer for Jalan TS1!

In the short month since the first public meeting on April 6, the nearest volunteer covering Jln TS1 was from the main road -- Jln Taman Seputeh. Thanks, Shereen, for the "extra cover" all this while.

So residents of Jln TS1, please contact Nadiah at nadiahazeman@gmail.com.

Online poll re-opened

By popular request, the online poll on how much Seputeh residents are willing to fork out for "community self-help" security scheme is now re-opened.

Please note, the organisers (SSTF) are not saying or promising anything like "no-crime" or "crime-free" much less "zero-crime" when any scheme eventually gets the majority backing.

Key-words are "community self-help". Objective: to help improve security in our neighbourhood and to work closely with the police.

Happy voting!

Thanks for your support David Chan

Orang Seputeh thanks David for his expression of support for the community self-help security scheme which he left in his comment tonight under the SSTF posting. To the volunteers involved, every bit of appreciation and support goes a long way to build up our spirit.
Just to clarify: The 9-vote poll you see actually is the total number of fellow Orang Seputeh who clicked on the poll which closed weeks ago. Actually, the SSTF has garnered the support of over 300 households and with the on-going campaign, SSTF hopes to rope in more.
We will be in touch with you but please could you let us know your street so that we can connect you to the correct volunteer. Alternatively, you may email SSTF chairman Robert Quah at robertquah@myjaring.net or quahrobert@yahoo.com.

Malay Mail features Seputeh security on June 2 (click on picture to read clipping)

It is good that somehow The Malay Mail got in touch with our SRA people and asked some questions. Not everything that's reported may be true but at least we'll be on the radar screens of the powers-that-be.

Orang Seputeh does not encourage anyone to "take the law into his own hands" or conduct security patrols on their own. However noble the intentions are, please do not take unnecessary risks.
