One More Snatch Theft Friday Feb 6

Fellow Orang Seputeh,
One more case of a snatch theft took place around 9.30-10pm along our main road. Fortunately, the victim was not seriously hurt but she was traumatised enough.
It happened when she arrived at a friend's house along the main road. She was standing near the Japan Club's main entrance road when she was robbed.
A man, believed to be a foreigner from a neighbouring country, dashed towards her and grabbed her handbag. She lost it after fracturing a finger. The robber dashed up the slope towards the bus-stop where an accomplice was waiting on a motorcycle.
Unfortunately, her friend who tried to chase the robbers fell and hurt himself. There were several witnesses, including the friend's wife and a few friends. A police report has been lodged.

All we can do now is to hope Brickfields police will increase patrol frequency.... and continue to harp on "non-paying" solutions like Rukun Tetangga, private CCTV cameras (whose? where?) and "long-term" measures which 7o out of over 700 residents supported.

Let the 70 people who voted NOT to have our own security scheme come and tell these victims how their "no payment" wishful thinking can prevent or deter such thefts.

It may be time to act, dear fellow Orang Seputeh. Your views are welcome.

Best regards,
Orang Seputeh

Towards a More Secure Future

I am surprised the residents are not willing to pay for security. In Taman Desa where I am residing, since having the security services, break-ins and petty crime have reduced substantially.

I am now a bit concerned with the development in Seputeh considering I just bought a property here as I planned to move from Taman Desa to Seputeh in the near future.

Dear Orang Seputeh,

Its interesting to note that while the crime rate in our neighbourhood is increasing rapidly
the issue of a small number of residents not wanting to pay for security is still being brought up. I hope the new SRA/SSTF is not expecting all residents to pay up before moving forward. After all I do not think the many homes that house foreign workers are going to pay for security nor are those in the condos and apartments who already pay for their own security. Does this mean the whole plan gets shelved just because 10% of residents do not agree for various reasons?
If you remember I did bring up the issue of the are near the Japan club and the walk way to midvalley earlier. Emails were sent out to the SSTF and the old SRA but no one took any action. Is it the belief of the SSTF that a security company will solve all security problems? As you did suggest the 70 households to explain to the victims how a non paying scheme can deter such thefts, will the SSTF and 630 households be able to explain if crime still continues after a paying scheme is introduced?

Hi

I am wondering what gurantee the SSTF gives on the efficiency of a security company. As a condo dweller I am already paying for security. My problem arises when I as well as most other residents go on our daily strolls and errands. As I come to understand there have been alot of snatch thefts etc as well as folks being followed before being robbed.
Looking at the current situation in Tmn Seputeh, I notice there is an increase in the flow of motorcycle traffic. If and when a security scheme is launched is there going to be guard posts placed at the "few" entry/exit points into our taman? Also do will the guards have the power to stop suspicious motorists should they enter?
Iwill be willing to pay for any scheme that offers all around protection rather than one that just seems like a solutuion but doesnt looks like its even getting off the ground after many months.

To be fair, there cannot be a blanket guarantee that crime will come to a naught once we have the security scheme. I thought its not reasonable to ask for such guarantee from SSTF.

As for the Taman Desa scheme, the condo dwellers are not involved in the scheme. Its only limited to the landed property dwellers.

On the Taman Desa scheme, what make it effective are a couple of reasons (1) Sufficient guards to make patrols on a more frequent basis. (2) Checkpoints at critical junctions (3) They even have car stickers for residents so that guards are aware of 'non-resident' cars lurking around

Hi,

IMHO, we should just start the security scheme. There will never be 100% participation.

Teething issues will definitely be there. But we have to start somewhere right ?

Just get on with it..
