Daylight Robbery March 26

Guest posting
Daylight Robbery

As part of my morning exercise routine, I often cycle around the crescent formed by roads Taman Seputeh 2, 3 and 4.
Every time I do this route I have been very impressed when I meet a dear old lady with her maid out exercising with the aid of a ‘Zimmer frame’.
She can just about walk and may only cover a hundred yards in 20 minutes, but as least she is getting out and making the effort.
I always gain pleasure and inspiration from her determination, her lovely smile and her cheery ‘Good Morning’ greeting.
Today [Thursday 26th march 2009] however it was a very different story, It was approximately 8.35am when I met this dear lady & her maid, as I cycled along Taman Seputeh 3; but this time they were accompanied by several other ladies, and there seem to be some commotion.
The dear old lady (I think her name is Mrs Hewi, or something like that – sorry about the spelling), had tears in her eyes, and the maid was also crying.
The other ladies then helped the old lady into a car and drove her 50 meters to her house.I now knew there was something not right, so I stopped and chatted with several people including a Mrs Tan, who lives very nearby.
It turns out that two ‘Malay speaking’ youths on a motorcycle approached the lady and the maid. The pillion rider produced a knife, and ordered them not to scream or shout.
They then pushed the old lady to the floor and snatched her gold necklace before riding off!
It must have happened literally a minute or maximum two before I arrived as I did not see any motorcycle exiting onto Taman Seputeh, and another maid said the went out of Taman Seputeh 3.
Two minutes earlier and I would have witnessed this foul act taking place. I know I could not have stood back, and done nothing, and who knows what the outcome might have been.
Maybe it was a blessing for me, but for sure I would have attacked, with only my bicycle, fists and feet as weapons; but against a moron with a knife the outcome is by no means certain.
Scary, but yet more evidence that Seputeh is no longer the safe place it used to be, and you don’t have to wait until it is dark.
Now having related this very current & topical story, from a personal perspective, I have to hide it away under ‘Comments’ for no one to see!
Why can't the Forum Moderator open it up for general comments from the public?
What are you scared off? Topics can still be approved before posting, moderated, or deleted as is currently the case.
When can we have a real Seputeh Residents Forum, or shall I set one up myself?'

Email from concerned Seputeh neighbour

Hi Robert,
I’m Tan from , Jln Tmn Seputeh 2.
Lately I have noticed this chap going around our neighbourhood requesting for money. It usually happen towards the evening time that I have seen this chap.
The first time I noticed this chap was around in Dec’08 approaching a house a few house down the road from where I live, jln tmn seputeh 2. That was approx 8pm.
The second time, can’t recall the month, was approx 6+ in the evening where he carried a plant and approaching a few houses to try to sell it. Not sure whether he succeeded in selling off the plant.
On 22/3/09’s evening while going for my usual evening walk I noticed him again this time with bandage around his next (probably a fake one) and approaching houses for money at jln tmn seputeh 5 & 6.
I’m just worry that he may start something more drastic if he cannot get enough “income” visiting houses in our neighbourhood.
I hope you can assist to post this up at Orang Seputeh blog to inform others and be ready to call in the police if this chap start making further rounds at our neighbourhood.

Rgds,Tan

When the recession bites, will Seputeh be ready?

Fellow Orang Seputeh,
When the economy goes downhill as the year progresses, there will be more desperate people. Desperate enough to take to a life of crime. Will Seputeh be ready to keep them off?

Retrenched worker fails on first day at new job – as snatch thief
JOHOR BARU, March 1 – A 24-year-old man, who was one the many Malaysians retrenched from their jobs in Singapore, decided to try a new line of work – crime.

Jobless and having his credit cards maxed out, the man resorted to snatching to make the ends meet only to be caught on his attempt here today.

The would-be criminal, who has a two-year-old child, had his eye set on profiting from project executive, Nor Emylia Zakaria, 24.

The man was said to have waited for Nor Emylia, who was paying her car installment at the CIMB Bank cash deposit machine at Jalan Serampang, Taman Pelangi at 5.30pm.

As it was raining heavily, he took shelter as he observed his intended victim closely.
Surprising Nor Emylia, he snatched her handbag as she came out of the bank’s premises.
Nor Emylia screamed for help and took off after the thief.

“He punched me as I scuffled with him while he tried to enter his Naza Suria and my foot got stuck when he tried to close the door,” she said.

Several patrons of a nearby restaurant came to the aid of Nor Emylia, who suffered body and hand injuries.

The police managed to recover the victim’s handbag and found the snatcher’s wallet, apparently dropped in the car when he ran away.

Police got his address from his identity card and were waiting for him when he reached his home, also in Taman Pelangi.

Nor Emylia suffered losses of about RM1,000 from damage to a mobile phone and a pair of spectacles broken during the scuffle.

For Nor Emylia, it was her second brush with crime as she had been a victim of another snatch thief in last September last year.

Johor Baru (South) police chief, ACP Zainuddin Yaakob, when contacted confirmed the case. – Bernama

The snatch thieves are already active along Jalan Tmn Seputeh 1 and near Japan Club. They have been lying low because of police action. They will come back... unless we take proactive measures to keep them out.

Best regards,

In NST today: Pistol-whipped in pre-dawn robbery

Fellow Orang Seputeh,

This was what happened to a family in Seri Gombak. Please read the last line:

NST Online » Local News 2009/03/01
Pistol-whipped in pre-dawn robbery
KUALA LUMPUR: When Tay Poh Yang was awakened early yesterday, she was horrified to see a bloodied face staring at her.

The face was that of her husband, who sustained a deep cut on his forehead after being pistol-whipped by one of four masked robbers.

The husband, who only wanted to be known as See, had woken up about 4.30am to turn off the air-conditioner and open the windows of their house in Taman Seri Gombak.

All of a sudden, he was confronted by three men brandishing parang and one armed with a pistol. Before he could react, the man with the pistol hit him on the forehead with his firearm.

"The robber cocked his pistol and aimed it at my head. "I was told not to move and to keep quiet," said See.

Shortly afterward, the 44-year-old Tay and the couple's two sons were herded into a corner and told to be quiet, while another robber pounded on their daughter's room door.

See said: "He went in and ordered my daughter to join her mother and brothers in the corner. "All the while, I was clutching my head and blood was oozing out from the wound."

Tay said she poured out the contents of her handbag for the robbers."I told them to take whatever they wanted as long as they left my family alone."

The robbers were believed to have climbed over the front gate of the house. They used an unidentified liquid and a crowbar to break open the lock on a door. The robbers escaped with mobile phones, jewellery and cash.

However, in their haste, they left behind a ski mask and two parang. A neighbour took Tay to the Gombak police headquarters to lodge a report while another took See to the hospital to have his head wound treated.

After the robbery, residents in the area have hired a security firm to patrol their neighbourhood.

Let us not wait for such a misfortune to befall an Orang Seputeh before we act.
